A+ Handyman
The calls that come in here are almost never “replace it.” They are the patio that has settled and cracked, the fence post that started leaning after the last storm, the two siding panels the mower threw a rock through, the back door that has to be lifted to latch.
All of that is repair work, and repair is the cheaper half of this trade. It is also most of what we do — the majority of our week is half-day repair calls in ordinary Winchester and Frederick County houses, not remodels. That is the actual shape of this business, not a sideline to it.
Siding. Cracked, loose and storm-damaged panels, and the rotted trim and sheathing behind them. Vinyl, aluminium and fibre cement. Matching an older colour is the hard part, and we will tell you up front what a repaired section is going to look like next to twenty-year-old siding rather than let you discover it afterwards.
Fences and posts. Rotted or leaning posts reset, rails and pickets replaced, gates that drag re-hung so they latch again. Wood and vinyl.
Patios, porches and steps. Boards, railings, posts, stair treads and the handrail that has been loose since spring. A good share of what looks like damage out there is dirt, and comes off with washing rather than replacing.
Doors and windows. Exterior doors that stick, bind or won’t latch. Rotted jambs and thresholds. Storm doors, interior doors, closet doors, and weather stripping that stopped sealing three winters ago and is quietly costing you money every January.
Trim, soffit and fascia. Rot repair and replacement, inside and out. This is usually where a small water problem announces itself, and it is the cheapest place to catch one.
Decks and railings. Boards, framing, posts, rails and stairs — the structural parts as well as the ones you can see.
The inside list. TV mounting, shelving and closet systems, blind and shade repair, towel bars and grab bars, curtain rods, mirrors, and the pictures that have been leaning against the wall since you moved in.
Electrical — fans, fixtures, outlets, switches, dead circuits and panel work.
Plumbing — faucets, toilets, disposals, shutoffs and leaks.
Drywall — holes, cracks, water damage, texture matched and painted back in.
Painting — inside and out, with the repairs done first.
Gutters — cleaning, repair, downspouts, guards, and full replacement when a run is past saving.
Pressure washing — siding, concrete, decks and fences.
Bathroom and kitchen remodels, plus basements, and interior renovation generally — start to finish with one crew.
Nobody has one thing wrong with their house. There is the thing that finally made you pick up the phone, and then there are eight others you have stopped noticing.
We would rather block out a half day and clear eleven items than come back four separate times, and it costs you less that way. So when you call, read out all of it — the ones you think are too small especially. The more we know before we load the truck, the more of it gets finished on the first visit.
Sometimes the honest answer is that repairing something is throwing money at it. A door that has been patched twice, a run of gutter that has come apart at every seam, a deck where the framing is going and not just the boards.
We will say so, and we will tell you what the difference costs, and then it is your decision. If I fix something it is supposed to stay fixed — you shouldn’t have to call me about it again next month. That is the whole standard.
There are also a few things we simply don’t do, and we would rather tell you now than waste your afternoon: anything involving gas, and appliance repair. We will point you at someone who does.

Most of what we repair was preventable, and the people who call us twice a year spend less than the people who call us when something has already got inside the wall. If you would rather have somebody looking at the house on a schedule, that is what the preventative maintenance plans are for.
